The primary driver of the increased cases, hospitalizations and deaths is the emergence of the
Delta variant in Mississippi. As of July 30, 2021, the Delta variant is the predominant strain in in
the state accounting for an estimated 93% of cases in the state. The Delta variant is much more
contagious, and spreads three times as easily compared to other strains.
